This course covers all the basic sewing skills needed to get started with machine stitching. The focus will be on how to use a machine, follow a pattern, create seams, alter and hem. You will have time to complete a few sewing projects. Limited machines available. Beginning sewing : first-time students : Our first project will be a reversible tote bag with a front pocket. We'll learn the basics in sewing, how to cut and put the pieces together and how to use a sewing machine (see attached pic). List of supplies : one yard of two different cotton fabrics and half a yard of canvass (to make the bag more sturdy). The students will also need to bring their own sewing kit : thread (matching the color of their fabric), needles, pins, scissors, measuring tape, thimble (if they use one)... Our second project will be a zipped "pencil-shaped pencil case" and our third project, if time permits, will be a pajama pant (we'll learn how to use a paper pattern). The lists of supplies will be given in class. Returning students : if you have already taken the class and done some of the projects, we will make a woman's jacket (see attached pic). Or you can bring a personalized project if you prefer. List of supplies for the jacket : velvet, fleece or "matelasse" : one yard and twelve inches (48 inches = 1,20 m) for a fabric of 58 inches width (1,50 m), 5 yards of "double fold extra-wide bias tape", 3 or 4 buttons, matching thread and your own sewing kit. There are several craft stores in the neighborhood : Michaels at Clairemont Square, Beverly's on Balboa Avenue (between Genesee and 805), Yardage Town on Clairemont Mesa Blvd (West of 805). If you sign up on their website to be on their mailing list (it's free), you will receive every week several coupons for discounts up to 40 or 50%. Walmart also has very affordable craft materials
